Hard-pressed U.S. manufacturers are bracing for another lean year in the geostationary communications satellite marketplace, but they all are positioning themselves for a rebound most of them believe will start in 2004. Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Loral and Orbital Sciences have been hard-pressed by the head-on collision between the collapsing telecommunications market and technology advances that boost the capacity and service life of new communi- cations satellites. As satellite technology has gotten better and more durable, demand for new commercial satellites has plummeted while operators regrouped to accommodate a round of consolidation. For reasons that have little to do with market economics, the U.S. satellite manufacturers have found it difficult to rationalize their own capacity.
