Big changes are underway in military training, made possible by improvements in simulation technology and motivated by a scarcity of funds for training with actual hardware. A flood of small companies are offering imaginative techniques in displays, graphics and software that are providing more realism and are leading to lower cost training devices. Among the advances are wide field-of-view visual displays for low-end flight simulators, a light-weight laser projector that gives brighter images, and photorealistic "out-the-window" graphics whose startling realism makes it easy for pilots to identify known terrain and man-made features.
