Bell Agusta Aerospace Co. is completing final assembly of a preproduction BA609 civil tiltrotor in preparation for the aircraft's first flight this summer. Donald J. Barbour, Bell Helicopters executive director of civil tiltrotor programs, said final assembly of the first BA609 is progressing but "a lot of work" remains before rollout and initial ground-based tests begin. Although no date has been set for these two events, "We are keeping pace with our planned schedule and still expect to attain FAA certification in 2003," he said. Barbour expects the flight test program will require about 1,500 hr. of flying and 18 months to complete. Static and fatigue tests are scheduled to begin later this year.
