One of the largest formations of B-25 Mitchell bombers seen in years appeared at ceremonies in California last month in honor of survivors of the 1942 Doolittle Raid. Twelve North American Aviation Co.-built B-25s, from as far away as Florida, Illinois and Oregon, flew over the deck of the USS Hornet in Alameda, Calif., on May 11. Several of the original Doolittle raiders were passengers. This commemorated the Apr. 18, 1942, bombing mission of military and industrial targets in Tokyo and other cities in Japan. Then-Lt. Col. "Jimmy" Doolittle led the novel raid, in which 16 ground-based B-25Bs were launched from the deck of the USS Hornet. This carrier was later sunk at the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands in October 1942 (AW&ST Apr. 9, p. 52).
