The economic pain inflicted on the U.S. aerospace industry by terrorists who attacked Washington and New York may not become as acute as it will for the airlines, but it will be greater than anything the sector has experienced in many years (see p. 14). The Aerospace Industries Assn. (AIA) expects total sales to drop by up to $5.6 billion in 2002, and by as much as $6.7 billion in 2003. Increased military and space-related sales may offset some commercial losses, depending on how the Bush Administration responds to the crisis, but it's too soon to tell by how much. For 2001, commercial aircraft and parts sales are expected to fall by about $2 billion from AIA's prior estimate, which was essentially steady compared with 2000. Most directly affected by the downturn will be the tens of thousands of people who will be laid off. Boeing is preparing to cut as many as 30,000 jobs, and many of its major suppliers almost certainly will follow suit. On the heels of Boeing, for example, Honeywell Aerospace indicated it will reduce its workforce by 4,800 in the next 12 months.
