Indium Satellite LLC says the aeronautic version of its low-Earth orbit satellite cell phone network can back up flight data recorders on commercial jetliners, allowing investigators to read the same voice and flight data from permanent ground recorders that is now captured by hardened onboard recorders for post-crash analysis. The company, which took over the 66-satellite constellation after the original Irid-ium venture failed (AW&ST July 23, p. 64), is marketing a Honeywell-built Airsat phone that it says could download voice and flight data to FAA recorders on the ground, and could also enable a real-time monitoring link with two-way capability to airborne aircraft in trouble even on polar routes. "It is off-the-shelf capability; it can be implemented quickly, and, as recent events indicate, it is needed," stated Dan Colussy, die company's chairman.
