The air line pilots assn. is lobbying Congress to permit (or even require) flight crewmembers to have firearms in the cockpit. The stun gun proposal had considerable merit, but this recommendation fails to address what should be die greater emphasis—limiting contact between cockpit crewmembers and passengers. It should not be necessary to have the captain personally make contact with an unruly or otherwise disruptive passenger. Yes, the captain is the sole authority responsible for the safety of the aircraft. However, that responsibility should not detract from the flight crew's primary and overriding mission of flying the airplane. Having the cabin crew attempt to defuse a situation by resorting to the "If you don't behave, I'm going to tell my father!" type of action is no longer acceptable.
