Since converting its air traffic control network to a self-funded, commercial operation, Australia has developed one of the most modern, efficient and reliable ATC systems in the world. The nation's highly integrated system is now considered a benchmark for high-tech, cost-effective air traffic control. In fact, in 1999, Airservices Australia, the government-owned commercial corporation that choreographs air traffic, navigation, rescue and fire-fighting services for approximately 4 million aircraft operations a year, was named "the world's best air-navigation services provider" by the International Air Transport Assn.
