The Defense Dept.'s involvement in curbing the flow of drugs from South America into the United States has declined drastically in recent years and has created a shortfall in monitoring drug traffic, a General Accounting Office assessment has concluded. Although the Pentagon is not the primary organization assigned to the coun-terdrug mission, the use of its early warning and interdiction aircraft are critical to being able to monitor and halt drug smuggling activities. Under a standing order, seven P-3s, four E-2C airborne early warning aircraft, two E-3 AWACS, and four F-15/16 aircraft are assigned to counterdrug operations, along with several Navy ships.
