The worldwide fleet of jet freighters recently surpassed the 1,500 mark. The fleet size has more than tripled from a level of 500 which was reached during 1985, less than 15 years ago. During this period there has been a commensurate increase in worldwide air freight traffic from 43 billion freight tonne km. in 1985 to an estimated 125 billion FTKs in 1999. That traffic growth equates to an average annual increase of about 7.5%; however, some years have seen much faster growth than others.
