E-marketplace should help achieve the cost-saving benefits of consolidation that have eluded the industry so far. A new entrant has joined the scramble to establish an electronic marketplace for the aerospace and defense sector. It doesn't have a dot.com name yet, its services are more concept than reality and its software is yet to be refined. But it is big, and that may make all the difference. Chairmen and CEOs of the three largest U.S. aerospace manufacturers— Boeing, Lockheed Martin and Ray-theon—and the world's second largest defense contractor—BAE Systems—said last week they will back a stand-alone company to run a business-to-business (B2B) Web enterprise serving the worldwide aerospace and defense (A&D) industry.
