As part of a "marvelous regulatory renewal," India has opened the door wider for satellite and Internet services by clarifying rules and procedures for private domestic firms and foreigners to follow as they compete alongside the state-owned Insat system. The move reflects a recognition that India, with a total population that recently surpassed 1 billion people—and a middle class of several hundred million—will suffer economically if it does not keep pace with the developed world in satellite services and broadband communications, especially for the Internet.
