Top Alaska Airlines officials are confident the airline can make the changes and upgrades necessary to avoid a threatened FAA suspension of its heavy maintenance authority next month in the aftermath of the fatal crash of Flight 261. The Jan. 31 accident also raises concerns about shortcomings in the FAA's airline oversight process, which allows U.S. airlines to develop and follow widely different repair and maintenance practices for similar aircraft. The National Transportation Safety Board investigation is focusing on a faulty jackscrew that operated the MD-83's horizontal stabilizer. High wear and insufficient lubrication were found on the recovered component.
