Bowing to intense U.S. pressure, Israel has scrapped the pending sale to China of a Russian A-50 aircraft fitted with an Israeli-developed Phalcon airborne early warning system which has been a source of friction between the two nations. The Israeli decision came as Prime Min- ister Ehud Barak was engaged in U.S.- sponsored talks with Palestinian President Yasser Arafat at Camp David, Md. Barak's spokesman linked the decision to Israel's desire to maintain good relations with the U.S. as it embarked on crucial negotiations "affecting its essential interests."
