London and Washington are exploring British ambitions to provide greater technical input into the nonnuclear payload and systems of any Trident-based successor to the country's nuclear deterrent. The U.K. has been studying more involvement with the U.S.—including the possibility of British-developed subsystems—should it decide to pursue a future nuclear deterrent that continues to be based on a submarine-launched ballistic missile. This could cover passive and active countermeasures payloads, including penetration aids, and much greater access to guidance technology.
