NASA managers like to describe the upcoming 12a.l International Space Station assembly mission as rewiring your house while you live in it. But this abode has far more moving parts, all flying about 17,000 mph., 250 mi. high. Before the space shuttle Discovery departs from its scheduled STS-116 visit early in December, the 10 men and women of the combined shuttle and ISS crews plan to set in motion the first of the giant rotating ISS solar array "wings," and run the power it generates into the station grid. The 270-ft. structure will windmill around the main ISS truss on a huge tooth-and-cog gear to keep its power-generating cells in the best possible alignment with the Sun, while secondary rotating joints keep them properly feathered into the sunlight.
