In February, Environmental Tectonics Corp. will inaugurate a centrifuge-based flight simulation program designed to teach commercial pilots inflight upset recovery procedures. "Existing simulators are not able to replicate the motion dynamics of an aircraft upset situation, but these stimuli, especially sustained g-forces, are primary drivers in a pilot's response to an upset," says Richard A. Leland, ETC's vice president for training operations and the program's principal investigator. "A new approach is needed to provide pilots with a safe and economical training system to counter aircraft upsets."
