Spectacular profits in the long-haul business plan of Australian budget airline Jetstar must be on the minds of private equity investors who are proposing a buyout of its parent, Qantas. No-frills scheduled services on long-haul routes have been tried before, usually unsuccessfully, but now Jetstar Airways is among a host of airlines that wants to try again. It has the benefit of experience: one of the most recent flops in the sector was another Qantas unit, Australian Airlines, which was folded back into the mainline operation in July after failing to achieve decisively low costs.
