Nato launched its long-threat-ened air offensive against Yu-goslavia last week, a campaign that tests the alliances ability to use air strikes alone to halt a brutal ground offensive being conducted by a determined and well-equipped opponent. "We are going to systematically and progressively attack, disrupt, degrade, devastate and ultimately destroy these forces and their facilities and support, unless [Yugoslav President Slobodan] Milosevic complies with the demands of the international community," said U.S. Gen. Wesley Clark, supreme commander, Allied Forces Europe. "The operation will be just as long and as difficult as Milosevic wants it to be."
