U.S. Air Force officials are examining ways to accelerate product improvements into the services' F110 and F100 engine fleets in response to six, non-fatal engine-related dass-A mishaps that occurred in USAF F-16s between November 1998 and February 1999. USAF's goal is to fund the acceleration of six specific upgrades that would correct issues related to several of the recent class-A incidents, which the Air Force defines as accidents involving loss of life or aircraft damage in excess of $ 1 million. The commanders of USAF combat air forces could be briefed on the proposal as early as mid-May. If approved and allowed to go forward, funds for the accelerated efforts could be available in the Fiscal 2000 budget.
