摘要

Security personnel at U.S. Category X airports have started using new screen-ing technology that tests their alertness by projecting simulated images of weapons and bombs into passenger bags. The new technology, called Threat Image Projection (TIP), is being offered as an option on X-ray machines made by EG&G Astrophysics of Long Beach, Calif., and Rapiscan Security Products of Hawthorne, Calif. The FAA plans to buy more than 400 TIP-equipped X-ray machines this fiscal year at a cost of $25 million, said the agency's director of civil aviation security and planning, Anthony Fainberg. Over the next 4-5 years, all se-durity checkpoints in the U.S. likely will be equipped with TIP, Fainberg said.
