Tanker aircrews and technicians are the majority of 2,100 Air Nation-al Guard and Air Force Reserve personnel placed on active duty for up to 270 days. They are part of a presidential select reserve call-up to allow acceleration of operations in the Kosovo conflict. These personnel and another 30 KC- 135E/R tanker aircraft are needed to prevent fraying of the active duty and volunteer reserve force as allied air forces shift from operations primarily at night to intensified round-the-clock bombing. The move also will let the service avoid stripping training organizations of their cadres. However, Air Force officials say they don't expect the service will have to call up airlift aircrews and maintainers.
