Industry and congressional officials are skeptical about whether the Pentagon can fix the problem of low stock valuations in the defense industry about which Deputy Defense Secretary John Hamre has expressed concern. Hamre, in a speech earlier this month, raised eyebrows in the defense industry when he criticized Wall Street for undervaluing defense companies, despite what he described as stable growth (AW&ST Nov. 8, p. 30). The comments followed especially troublesome weeks for Raytheon and Lockheed Martin during which their market capitalization dropped by several billion dollars, potentially turning the companies into hostile takeover targets.
