British Midland's decision to join the Star Alliance nearly doubles the number of takeoff and landing slots the group controls at London Heathrow Airport, creating a formidable competitor to British Airways on its home turf. British Midland controls 14% of the slots at Heathrow. When combined with those held by Star Alliance partners, including Lufthansa, United Airlines, Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS) and Air Canada, the grouping will have control of 27% of all slots at London's largest airport. British Airways controls 37% itself and 45% in conjunction with its Oneworld partners, which include American Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Qantas and Iberia.
