The trade accord that sets the groundwork to bring China into the World Trade Organization is unlikely to have immediate impact for aerospace, but it is viewed positively by manufacturers, who believe any effort that opens the Chinese economy to increased trade will rebound in their favor. The agreement, signed by U.S. and Chinese representatives last week, emphasizes such areas as agriculture, telecommunications and services rather than aerospace. As it negotiated on behalf of the U.S., the Clinton Administration was essentially representing the world's industrialized nations with regard to opening China's markets. So any trade gains that benefit U.S. aerospace manufacturers are likely to help Canadian, European and other Asian aerospace nations as well.
