A U.K. parliamentary committee has labeled the Ministry of Defense's plan to privatize government research laboratories as "fatally flawed." Noting Pentagon warnings, the panel said the move would jeopardize cooperative work with the U.S. as well as other European countries and "should not proceed as planned," The House of Commons defense committee said the government's plans were "incoherent and self-contradictory." The proposal, conceived in 1998, has drawn harsh criticism from British industry, unions and the Pentagon. And the reaction recendy forced the Ministry of Defense to postpone a decision until next year.
