Record fuel prices, which are a threat to most of the industry's profitability, are expected to spark regional carriers' interest in twin-turboprop aircraft, ATR top executives claim. "Twin turboprops evolved into a niche segment but, in the midst of a terrible [operating] cost battle, the 'jet-mania' wave is over and the market is coming into balance," says ATR Chief Executive Filippo Bagnato. The Franco-Italian manufacturer's business managers determined that a 70-seat twin turboprop's fuel consumption on a 300-naut.-mi. route can save as much as $30 per seat. In terms of direct operating costs, twinjets could not compete against twin turboprops on stage lengths of less than 400 naut. mi., Bagnato adds.
