摘要

In a new twist in the ongoing debate over large civil aircraft subsidies, Airbus is signaling it would welcome a revised financial-assistance framework built around the type of indirect government research-and-devclopment grants that Boeing has received. Airbus' top executives have long defended the loans and guarantees European governments provide to the Toulouse-based company, which offset up to one-third of an aircraft's development cost in the form of reimbursable funding. However, Philippe Delmas, executive vice president for government relations and Airbus' point man on trade issues, now says the so-called indirect support the U.S. grants Boeing—through NASA-funded research and similar projects—"is a very sound system." Up to now, Airbus' management had kept a low profile on the trade topic. It resisted all comment while government negotiators met, noting that the thorny issues were really up to the U.S. and European trade representatives to resolve. But now Delmas tells Aviation Week & Space Technology that "we're willing to reconsider entirely the system" of government support. "Anything that would go in the direction of more support for research and technology would be welcome."
