As Thales prepares for a new phase in European aerospace/defense consolidation, executives are first being forced to implement another round of restructuring in an attempt to offset higher currency costs. The dismal euro-dollar exchange rate, which will undercut future earnings, is spurring Thales managers to take a 200-million-euro charge split equally over 2005 and 2006. The measure is to offset a 130-million-euro hit to operating income by 2007 owing to the weakened dollar. Thales hopes this move will lead to operating income growth exceeding 10% in 2006 and 2007.
