Boeing is quietly assuring top U.S. Air Force planners that it will ep the 767 production line warm for the next two years. That would extend the service's option to buy the tankers if the Pentagon can find some way to win congressional approval for restarting the program. This takes the edge off an earlier warning that a final decision to shut down the line would be made this summer. Even without new sales, the line won't be completely idled for another 18 months, say Boeing officials. The initial 767 tanker, built for the Italian air force, is expected to make its first flight in late April. Other U.S. aerospace industry officials say Boeing's decision to unofficially extend the 767 deadline may benefit from the European Union's desire to sell arms to China. They predict that an EU decision to do so would likely create a White House and congressional backlash to any attempt by USAF to buy the EADS-marketed A330 tanker.
