A pioneering German-Russian, mission, set to begin testing this week on the International Space Station, aims to demonstrate the ability of robots to perform in-orbit servicing and repair tasks, saving valuable astronaut time and permitting work on satellites where manned intervention is not possible. Dubbed Rokviss (Robot Komponent Verification on ISS), the 11.5-million-euro ($15-million) mission was launched on Dec. 23,2004, by a Soyuz rocket and installed on the orbital facility's Russian Service Module on Jan. 26. Inte- grated by EADS for German aerospace center DLR, it aims to verify the suitability of a new generation of ultralight robots equipped with an articulated, four-fingered hand for telepresence applications—video-monitored terrestrially controlled servicing operations with a man in the loop.
