The 2004 Laureate Awards sponsored by Aviation Week & Space Technology honored more than 40 people from around the globe for their outstanding achievements in aviation and aerospace. Presentation of awards highlighted an Apr. 5 gala din-ner for 220 guests staged in the Milestones of Flight Gallery in the National Air and Space Museum in Washington. The magazine's leadership, under the direction of Editor-in-Chief Anthony L. Velocci, Jr., chose the 2004 Laureates and Laureis Legends from a slate of nominees, which is compiled annually by the editors. Names of Laureates and Laureis Legends will be enshrined at the Laureis Hall of Farne in the museum, which was created seven years ago. Awards were presented in nine categories: Commercial Air Transport, Government/Military, Aeronautics/Propulsion, Space, Operations, Lifetime Achievement, Business & General Aviation and Innovation/Entrepreneurship. The latter two categories are new. The Electronics category was expanded to include Information Technology. Executive Vice President and Publisher Kenneth E. Gazzola set the theme for the event, observing: "The Laureate winners epitomize the values and visions of the aviation, aerospace and defense industries worldwide, and the Hall of Farne honors their place in history."
