The Air Force is spending $6.2 billion to upgrade its Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile force, but one of the program's unfunded needs is— ironically—a new helicopter. Air Force Space Command oper- Maj. Gen. Frank Klotz, commander of the nation's land-based ICBM force, provided an update last week to contractors, staffers and media. One of his major focuses, though, was on helicopters, not missiles. But, it seems at a time when the Defense Dept. is initiating competitions to replace a slew of its helicopter fleets—from special operations to heavy lift—the Huey replacement has slipped through the cracks.
