Ask most U.S. women approaching their 40th birthday if they plan on getting yearly mammograms, and the answer is likely an automatic "yes." But in 2009, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force lobbed a virtual hand grenade into the breast cancer screening arena: instead of continuing the well-known standard recommendation that all women over 40 receive annual mammograms, they concluded that the evidence instead favored women aged 50 - 74 getting mammograms every other year. Many other professional groups, notably the American Cancer Society, disagreed violently. Media reports threw gas on the resulting flames, and confusion abounded that continues to this day. In the midst of it all, how are women supposed to decide what to do?
