Exposure to careers away from the laboratory bench can be hard to come by for those of us working in academic settings. Therefore, on January 22, 2013, AWIS-Chicago hosted an alternative career panel at Northwestern's Lurie campus to help attendees learn about career paths outside academia. Our distinguished panelists, all of whom hold Ph.D.s, were Melanie Be-glin, research manager, pediatric clinical trials, at the University of Chicago; Jessica Reimer, scientific communications supervisor at Weber Shandwick and past VP for communications for AWIS-Chicago; Lynn Janulis, patent lawyer with Marshall, Gerstein & Borun LLP; and Loly Farnos, director for growth and strategy for catalysts, adsorbents, and specialties at UOP Honeywell and founding member of AWIS-Philadelphia.
