Contributors to the International Council for Caring Communities (ICCC) conference in February covered such diverse topics as telecentres, 'silver businesses' and the integration of housing for all generations. But the day's agenda was sharply focussed on the needs arising from the apocalyptic growth in the proportion of the elderly in the global population. The conference provided an opportunity to display and discuss the results of a biennial student design competition (www.international-iccc.org), attracting entries from 28 schools of architecture. Competitors had to address six themes representing common concerns in both developing and developed countries.
