You probably know that your drone has a flight mode or two on it that you can use, but do you know what flight modes do? A flight controller is a stabilizing unit that performs a number of complex calculations to adjust each motor to keep the multirotor flying level. In addition, it can incorporate GPS location data from satellites to maintain the multirotor's position in 3D space. Each manufacturer has its-own name for certain flight modes, but they can be classified into four main categories. The first mode includes ones that can position the multirotor both vertically and laterally, such as altitude hold and GPS position hold. The next mode category controls the orientation of the multirotor with respect to pilot position. Then there are fail-safe modes that allow the drone to recover from unusual attitudes or return to home. The final category includes flight modes in which you can program a preset function or functions to have the multirotor fly a set flight path.
