He cupped his hands over the phone's mouthpiece and yelled to be heard over the surrounding chaos. "Get two P-40s ready! It's not a gag; the Japs are here!" Those words may have been spoken most recently by movie star Ben Affleck in the movie Pearl Harbor, but the first time those sentences were uttered, it was by Lt. George Welch, and the time was shortly after 0800 hours, Hawaii time, December 7,1941. Purists have found lots of things wrong with the movie, but the mad dash of its two heroes to their Curtiss P-40s at the outlying field at Haleiwa was about as accurate as it gets.
