The Banker is not in the business of hyping up threats to banks. The world is sufficiently dangerous for us not to need to. But in this month's cover story, Jane Cooper explores an area that is scarier than most - the possibility of cyber attack - mainly because it is an unknown quantity. The prospect of criminal hacking of banking systems is bad enough, but the reality of a state-sponsored cyber attack takes things to a new and even more disturbing level. The big danger for banks is that they assume that because they haven't detected a failed attack there hasn't been one - turn to page 20 to understand better what the industry is up against.
