This paper proposes a virtual topology management protocol based on the multiple spanning tree protocol (MSTP) for ATM LAN emulation (LANE) service. The protocol allows unicast data frames to be routed based on the LANE server identifier rather than the media access control (MAC) address, since the MAC addressing scheme is not hierarchical. The broadcast service provided by the protocol is considerably more efficient because each spanning tree is constructed with respect to the source server.
