The introduction of conversational voice services into wireless networks introduces special problems for wireless networks. Traditional Internet Protocol (IP) networks provide large amounts of bandwidth and have large packets. For large packets, the overhead of the IP header is low. However, conversational voice services such as Voice over IP (VoIP) and push-to-talk (PTT) have very different packet characteristics and result in high protocol overhead. Wireless providers rely on leased T-1 or E-1 transport for communications between the mobile switching center and the base station. These facilities become a significant cost for the service provider. The introduction of the high overhead of conversational voice services transported via IP over these facilities without some overhead reduction method results in high protocol overhead, which reduces the effective bearer throughput on these costly facilities. This paper compares the strengths and weaknesses of several alternative solutions for reducing the overhead of IP data transport and their applicability to Alcatel-Lucent wireless products.
