In 1991, The New York Public Library's Special Collections Cataloging Unit began work under a grant from the Getty Grant Program of the J. Paul Getty Trust to process the backlog of uncataloged items in the Spencer Collection. Nearly 700 items were cataloged over the next three years; the majority were modern artist's books and livres d'artiste, but there were also 157 items published or produced before 1850. Many of these are of outstanding interest, either for the quality and scarcity of the original graphic materials they contain or the bindings they are housed in, or because they provide insight into little-known corners of the history of books and the graphic arts. Because the Spencer is in part a fine bindings collection, it is not surprising that a number of the items have distinguished provenances, as important collectors have always been interested in choice bindings and in many cases notable individuals commissioned the expensive work originally. I would like to single out a few of the treasures I remember with particular affection.
