This themed issue of Bioinspired, Biomimetic and Nanobiomaterials is related to the 10th Materials Science Congress 'Next Generation of Materials and Devices from Bioinspiration' that was held during 6-7 November 2013 at Montanuniversitat Leoben, Leoben, Austria The field of materials science is currently particularly interested in the development of sophisticated material solutions for various engineering and civil applications, such as energy and healthcare issues as well as consumer products, to increase their performance in multi-variant complex environments. In that context, the use of materials from nature and the development of materials inspired by nature are two fundamental concepts that have been used to improve materials properties and performance. In particular, intense current activities on bioinspired materials research include self-healing materials and materials for sensing and/or actuation, where nature provides scientists with an amazingly rich pool of inspiration of innovative materials solutions.
