A number of issues in phylogeny and classification of true finches is reviewed. Emphasis is made on poor knowledge of their relationships, in spite of intensive research. The main historic stages of development of true finches classification are reviewed together with the results of molecular studies of their phylogeny. Most recent revisions at the level of subfamilies and genera of true finches are discussed.
