The effects of chorionic gonadotropin (CG) and CG-induced hormonal background on the phagocytic activity of peripheral blood leukocytes and peritoneal macrophages were studied in female Swiss mice. In vitro, the direct immunosuppressing effect of CG on phagocytes depended on the function of L-type Ca~(2+) channels and was increased by an additional paracrine regulation by prostaglandins. At the systemic level, the CG effects depended on the activated production of sex steroids, which abolished the phagocyte-suppressing effect of CG and the development of adaptive immune responses.
