Editor's note: This is the second of a two-part series on the fundamentals of sterilizers. Part I, steam sterilization, can be found in the Nov./Dec. 2008 issue of BI&T.nnSteam sterilization is the preferred sterilization method for loose instruments, wrapped packs, and other items that are not heat-sensitive or moisture liable. Many of the items used in modern healthcare facilities can be steam sterilized, but fiberoptic endoscopes, plastic devices, and electronics-laden items may demand a different technique. Chemical sterilization, which may be compatible with these types of devices, has gained popularity since the 1950s.
