This special issue is dedicated to Christian Wandrey, Head of the Institute of Biotechnology at the Research Center Juelich (Germany). Since many years Christian Wandrey is very well recognized for his important contributions to biochemical engineering science. He is probably the most successful scientist within the entire field of bioengineering with respect to the development and industrial transfer of bioprocess technology. This success is based on his 'product in a bottle' strategy, meaning that he followed the process of making a chemical with biotechnology from first concepts to a finished stage, with a purification process also in place to deliver significant amounts of purified product.
