Nowadays, bioprocess modelling, dynamic analysis, optimisation, monitoring and control play an ever-increasing role in various fields, ranging from the production of high-added-value pharmaceuticals to environmental issues such as wastewater treatment. Besides the development of methods and tools for the identification of unknown model parameters, the on-line reconstruction of non-measured variables (using state estimation techniques or "software sensors"), and the real-time optimisation and control of bioprocesses, bioprocess engineering also encompasses new challenges in dynamic metabolic analysis, the deduction of reduced-order, simplified, models, and the study of cell regulation mechanisms. This special journal issue of Bioprocess and Biosystems Engineering includes eight articles reporting on recent research developments in these various areas.
