Only recently has bioprocess engineering on a micro-scale emerged as a means to increase the speed of bioprocess design. Driving forces are developments in high-throughput screening, the automated identification of lead compounds, and more and more automated combinatorial and genetic techniques for the efficient creation of large libraries of recombinant biocatalysts on the one hand, and the increasing pressure for 'faster time-to-market' on the other hand.
