摘要

A wave of strikes in China in the summer of 2010, particularly the strike of Honda parts workers in Foshan, has attracted wide attention both within and outside China. These wildcat strikes were a surprise to those international observers who held that Chinese workers were mindlessly docile. However, strikes are not new in China. They have escalated since 2004, most of which have not been reported due to the sensitivity of labour protests in China and are therefore not known by most of the world. Even less known are the causes, processes and outcomes of the strikes. Why do workers go on strike? How are the strikes organized? How do the strikes affect employers, workers and the government?
